Hossein Jafarian (Persian: حسین جعفریان ‎‎, born 25 March 1944 in Tehran) is an Iranian cinematographer.

Career

Hossein Jafarian is a graduate of Tehran's University of Dramatic Arts. He began his career working for Iranian state-run television where he shot over 40 documentaries and TV shows before retiring early soon after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. His feature film debut was with 1984's Tatooreh. But it wasn't until 1992's Nargess that he established himself as a leading cinematographer in Iran. It was with Nargess that he for the first time captured "real nights" on the Iranian film screen. Jafarian has a distinctive style of his own. His work draws comparisons with the American cinematographer Gordon Willis for his use of darkness and low-key lighting. Many of his films have gone on to win awards at international film festival, including; Abbas Kiarostami's Through the Olive Trees, Jafar Panahi's Crimson Gold and Asghar Farhadi's Fireworks Wednesday and About Elly. He was a guest at 2004's Camerimage with Crimson Gold and was nominated for the 'Golden Frog' in 2009 for About Elly.

Hossein Jafarian was voted the best cinematographer of the Iranian decade of the 1380s (2001-2011) by over 130 film critics in the 100th issue of the Iranian magazine Sanaat Cinama (Cinema Industry).

BIOGRAPHY

Hossein Amini (Persian: حسین امینی‎‎; born January 18, 1966) is an Iranian-British screenwriter and film director. Amini has worked as a screenwriter since the early 1990s. He was nominated for numerous awards for the 1997 film The Wings of the Dove, including an Academy Award for Best Writing – Adapted Screenplay. He also won a "Best Adapted Screenplay" award from the Austin Film Critics Association for his screenplay adaptation of Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive (2011), based on the novel by James Sallis. For his directorial debut, he both wrote and directed The Two Faces of January, an adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novel.

Career

Screenplays

Amini's first screenplay was for the 1994 TV movie The Dying of the Light, directed by Peter Kosminsky. The TV movie told the story of Sean Devereux, an aid worker who was murdered in Somalia in 1993 for criticizing arms sales. It was nominated "Best Single Drama" at the British Academy Television Awards. Amini also wrote an adapted screenplay of the 1895 novel Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy. Producer Andrew Eaton commissioned the screenplay in 1995, and it was filmed by Michael Winterbottom as Jude, released in 1996. Amini also wrote a screenplay for another TV movie, Deep Secrets, which aired in 1996.

Amini wrote the adapted screenplay for The Wings of the Dove, which was based on the 1902 eponymous novel by Henry James. The film, directed by Iain Softley, was released in 1997 and received critical claim. Amini was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing – Adapted Screenplay.

Amini was one of the screenwriters, along with Michael Schiffer, who wrote a screenplay adaptation of A.E.W. Mason's novel The Four Feathers, which became the film The Four Feathers (2002), directed by Shekhar Kapur and starring Wes Bentley and Heath Ledger. In 2008, he adapted the Elmore Leonard novel Killshot into the screenplay for the film Killshot (2008), directed by John Madden and starring Thomas Jane, Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Rosario Dawson.

In 2010, Amini wrote an original screenplay for a film entitled Shanghai directed by Mikael Håfström and starring Chow Yun Fat, Gong Li, Ken Watanabe and John Cusack.

Amini also wrote the screenplay for the neo-noir film Drive (2011), directed by Nicholas Winding Refn. His screenplay for the film is a loose adaptation of the novel of the same name by James Sallis. During interviews, Refn noted that he and Amini cut out a lot of the content from Sallis' book, resulting in the almost bare bones structure for the film, and the few lines of dialogue for the film's star, Ryan Gosling. For his screenplay of Drive, Amini also won a "Best Adapted Screenplay" award from the Austin Film Critics Association in 2011.

Amini was one of the screenwriters, along with Evan Daughtery and John Lee Hancock, who wrote the screenplay for Snow White and the Huntsman(2012), directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron. Additionally, Amini is one of the screenwriters, along with Chris Morgan and Walter Hamada, who wrote the screenplay for the film 47 Ronin (2013), directed by Carl Rinsch and starring Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and Rinko Kikuchi.

Amini adapted John le Carré’s novel Our Kind of Traitor into a feature film screenplay directed by Susanna White. The film, Our Kind of Traitor, was released in 2016. The film stars Ewan McGregor, Naomie Harris, and Stellan Skarsgård.

Directorial work

His feature directorial debut, The Two Faces of January (2014), is a film adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith novel for which he also wrote the screenplay adaptation. The film stars Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst and Oscar Isaac. Mick LaSalle describes The Two Faces of January as having "the allure of a thriller and the haunting quality of a character study."

In September 2013, Amini delivered a screenwriting lecture as part of the BAFTA and BFI Screenwriters' Lecture Series.

معنی کلمه هالیوود

این کلمه از دو واژهHolly به معنای مقدس و Holle و Hel به معنای الهه‌ی نورس و نیروی جادویی است و wood به معنای چوب، درختستان و جنگل است، پس لغت هالیوود به معنای مکان جادویی خواهد بود. هالیوود در واقع سمبلی از صنعت سرگرمی‌های آمریکایی است که این پیام را به دیگران می‌دهد که " اینجا مکانی است که جادو امکان‌پذیر است و رؤیاها می‌توانند تحقق یابند." حال باید ببیند که رؤیا ممکن است یک رؤیای محبت‌آمیز باشد و یا یک رؤیای خون‌ریزی و ظلم، که همه در اینجا واقعیت می‌یابند.

هالیوود چطور شکل گرفت؟

تاریخچه‌ی هالیوود به حدود 120 سال قبل می‌رسد. هالیوود بخشی از شهر لس‌آنجلس در ایالت کالیفرنیای آمریکا است و بعد از نیویورک دومین شهر بزرگ آمریکا به حساب می‌آید. در گذشته قبل از ایجاد هالیوود، مردم بومی در این منطقه زندگی می‌کردند که بیشتر سرخپوست بودند و سراسر آن را مزارع کشاورزی و علوفه دام‌ها و کوه‌ها پوشانده بودند. در سال 1870 این منطقه به دو بخش غربی به نام "رانچو لابری" و بخش شرقی به نام "رانچو لوس فیلز" تقسیم شد. در اواخر قرن نوزدهم میلادی بود که کم‌کم این بخش از حالت دورافتاده به شهر شبیه شد. بخش غربی را در سال 1886 مردی به نام هاروی ویلکاکس (Harvey Wilcox) آن را خرید و نام خود را بر آن گذاشت. سپس در سفری که به همراه همسرش با قطار داشتند با خانمی ملاقات کردند که نام هالیوود را برای خانه‌ی ییلاقی‌اش در فلوریدا انتخاب کرده بود. خانم و آقای ویلکاکس از این نام خوششان آمد و نام هالیوود را برای این شهر جدید انتخاب کردند. این شخص چند مدرسه، کتابخانه و کلیسا در این محدوده ساخت و ظاهر آن را به شهر نزدیک‌تر کرد.

افتتاح کارخانه‌ رویاسازی در هالیوود

ساخت فیلم از سال1907 در هالیوود آغاز شد و یک شرکت کوچک فیلم‌سازی از شیکاگوی ژاپن اولین فیلم در هالیوود را ساخت. به دلیل چشم‌اندازهای زیبا و بکری که در این منطقه وجود داشت به‌سرعت مورد توجه شرکت‌های فیلم‌سازی قرار گرفت و در سال 1912 نزدیک به پانزده استودیو در مناطق مختلف هالیوود ساخته شد. فیلم "مرد زن نما" در سال 1914 اولین فیلمی بود که به طور کامل در هالیوود ساخته شد و به نوعی این فیلم تولد صنعت فیلم‌سازی در هالیوود محسوب می‌شود. ساخت فیلم در سال 1915 در آمریکا به اوج رسیده بود و بازیگران جوان بسیاری با آرزوی ستاره شدن به هالیوود می‌آمدند و در خیابان‌ها و جنگل‌ها و کوه‌های جلوی دوربین نقش‌آفرینی می‌کردند.
فیلم‌های آمریکایی رونق فراوانی گرفته بودند و هر هفته حدود چهل میلیون نفر برای تماشای فیلم به سینما می‌رفتند. حالا دیگر هالیوود جای خود را در بین مردم به دست آورده بود. کم‌کم آپارتمان‌ها، هتل‌ها، باشگاه‌های شبانه و رستوران‌هایی در هالیوود ساخته شدند و خیابان‌ها به بلوارهای بزرگ تبدیل شدند. خانه‌های لوکس برای زندگی بازیگران نیز در آن به چشم می‌خورد. در این زمان هالیوود تمام نیروی خود را به کار برد تا فضای خود را همان‌گونه که هست حفظ کند. نماد هالیوود که حالا سمبل صنعت سینمای آمریکا بود و سبکی خاص برای زندگی کردن را ایجاد می‌کرد در سال 1923 دارای یک نماد خاص شد و این نماد را بر بیلبوردی بزرگ کشیدند و در ورودی شهر نصب کردند.
بعد از گذشت بیش از هشتاد سال هنوز این تابلو با چهار هزار لامپ 20 واتی بر بالای آن قرار دارد و راهنمای این منطقه است. بد نیست بدانید در غرب رودخانه می‌سی‌سی‌پی و در سال 1947 اولین ایستگاه تلویزیونی تبلیغاتی آمریکا شروع به کار کرد. خیابانی به نام پیاده روی شهرت (Hollywood Walk of Fame) در سال 1958 در این شهر ساخته شد که محل زندگی هنرمندانی است که در صنعت سرگرمی هالیوود مشغول به کار هستند. صنعت موسیقی آمریکا نیز استودیوهای ضبط خود را در دهه‌ی 50 به هالیوود انتقال داد. سرانجام هالیوود در سال 1958 به عنوان یک اثر رسمی تاریخی در لیست آثار تاریخی آمریکا ثبت شد.

تغییرات در هالیوود

شرکت‌های بزرگ فیلم‌سازی در مناطق مختلفی از هالیوود پراکنده هستند و سالن‌های تئاتر آن برای اجرای تئاترها و کنسرت‌های مهم مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرند و میزبان مراسم آکادمی اسکار هستند. گردشگران میهمانان این شهر جادویی هستند و هنوز بازیگران بزرگ و ماندگار سینما در خانه‌های لوکس آن زندگی می‌کنند. در ماه اوت سال 2006 دولت برای منطقه‌ی هالیوود مرزهایی را در نظر گرفت که این مرز از شمال به خیابان مل رز، از جنوب به دره لوران و بلوار بارهام و از شرق به محله بورلی هیلز و از غرب به هالیوود غربی می‌رسد. جالب است بدانید که هالیوود شهرداری ندارد و مأموری رسمی به عنوان شهردار افتخاری در آن فعالیت می‌کند.

رقابت با هالیوود

برخی کشورها بعد از موفقیت هالیوود در آمریکا تصمیم به ساخت مرکزی هنری همچون هالیوود برای خود گرفتند. به عنوان مثال هندوستان "بالیوود"، ایتالیا "چینه چیتا" را ساختند که هیچ کدام رقیبی واقعی برای هالیوود نبودند. در ایران هم خیابان لاله‌زار نقش هالیوود را ایفا می‌کرد. در سراسر این خیابان لاله‌هایی سبز می‌شدند که سبب نام‌گذاری آن نیز بودند. استودیوهای بزرگ فیلم ایران مانند پارس فیلم و میترا فیلم نیز در آن قرار دارند. دست‌فروشان لاله‌زار در گذشته عکس هنرپیشه‌ها را می‌فروختند.

BIOGRAPHY

Leila Hatami (Persian: لیلا حاتمی‎‎ Leylā Hātamī; born October 1, 1972) is an Iranian actress and director. She is the daughter of director Ali Hatami and actress Zari Khoshkam, and is married to actor Ali Mosaffa.

Biography

After finishing high school, she moved to Lausanne, Switzerland and started her studies in Mechanical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). After two years she changed her major to French literature. She completed her study of French in a couple of years, before moving back to Iran. Beside her native Persian language she is fluent in French, English and German.

After a pause of a few years which included the continuation of her studies in Switzerland she made her professional entry into cinema with Dariush Mehrjui's film Leila. Her acting in this film received rave reviews from critics and audiences.

She married her co-star in Leila (Ali Mosaffa) in 1999. They have two children: a son named Mani (born February 2007) and a daughter named Asal (born October 2008).

Career

She had a few short appearances during her childhood which included roles in the Hezar Dastan TV series and the Kamalolmolk movie, as well as a role in 1991 as a blind Turkish princess in Delshodegan.

Having appeared in bit parts in some of her father's movies, Hatami's first lead film appearance was the title role in the 1996 film Leila, directed by Dariush Mehrjui. She received the Diploma of Honor for Best Actress from the 15th Fajr Film Festival.

Her role in The Deserted Station (2002) won the best actress award from the 26th Montreal World Film Festival. She has appeared in her husband's films as a director, Portrait of a Lady Far Away (Ali Mosaffa- 2005) and The Last Step (Ali Mosaffa- 2012). She also designed the sets and the costumes of The Last Step and received a nomination at the Fajr Film Festival for best production design and costume design. In 2012 A Separation won the Academy Award for best foreign film in which Hatami played the leading female role.

In April 2014, she was announced as a member of the main competition jury at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. Whilst there, she greeted Cannes President Gilles Jacob with a kiss on the cheek, which is a form of greeting in France. Iran's Deputy Culture Minister Hossein Noushabadi offered criticism of her for this:

"I hope that those who attend international arenas as Iranian women would be careful about the chastity and dignity of Iranians so that the image of the Iranian woman is not tainted before the world," he said. "If they respect Islamic norms and the national culture and beliefs of Iran, it would be a desirable thing for Iranian celebrities to go abroad, but if their presence lacks regard for social values and ethical criteria, the Iranian nation is not going to accept it."
